The Institute for Humane Studies [IHS] is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing open inquiry and intellectual discovery in higher education.

OP_ED

As a Video Producer for IHS, I have worked with a small team to develop a series of op-ed style mini-documentaries. These videos, produced fully in-house, are meant to showcase some of the great research faculty in our network have been publishing.

We Don’t Have Community Policing. That’s No Accident. was the second video in the op-ed series and the first video where I acted as lead producer. As half of a two person team, this required researching and pitching the topic, contracting and directing videographers, conducting interviews, scripting, narrating, editing and animating.

PROCESS / NOTES

After getting my BFA in graphic design, making the quick pivot to video production was not...the easiest. With the guidance of my [very patient] supervisor, I have gained experience in all aspects of the video-making process and been a part of some really fun productions.

Very cool...but I am moving on...

This system pulls themes from the discography of rapper Vince Staples to brand a fictional tour, documentary, and book release in support of the YMCA Youth Institute arts program.

NEW_SHOES

On this tour, Vince Staples would release a limited run pressing of remastered songs on vinyl, a portfolio book of projects completed by students in the arts program, and an experimental documentary of life in Long Beach, California.

PROCESS / NOTES

Vince Staples has always been a fascinating rapper to me because he will rap candidly about committing murder in the same verse as an incredibly apt political take. I created this project to give more tangible weight to the major themes of his songs: the beauty and grit of Long Beach, gangbanging as a child, and Blue Suede Air Jordans (yes, I tried to buy a pair.)

I’m a celebrity, get me out of here!

SUM is the experiential alternative to genetic testing. While many services on the market offer a breakdown of your personal genomics, SUM hands you a breakdown of your breakdowns.

Powered by tears, SUM pairs beautifully with my playlist of Elliott Smith rarities.

PEAK_PISCES

Equally an absurdist response to the trend toward expedited psychoanalysis as it is a deeply Piscean excuse to talk about moping.

PROCESS / NOTES

This project started with sincere reflections on addiction and considering to what degree we are products of circumstance, ultimately culminating in a sign that I should really call my therapist. Doesn’t anyone else have an incessant need to unpack all of their behaviors and trace them to a specific moment just to have something to blame?

DEPRASINE by Pfuck is a fictional pro-depressant drug that targets creatives.

Pfuck’s advertisements drive the audience to Misery Loves Comedy, a documentary that explores the relationship between creatives and depression.

PFUCK_PFIZER [BUT TAKE YOUR MEDS]

Using absurdism to critique the toxic message that fueling depression is a “necessary evil” for making meaningful work, DEPRASINE gives a legitimate platform to a damaging position and mirrors the severity of the line of thinking it follows.

PROCESS / NOTES

Making DEPRASINE by Pfuck evolved from a grounding exercise during which I played a song at random and spent the entirety of that song focusing on a single sense, guided by the lyrics and melody. Writing that made me cringe. But that’s what happened! Somewhere down the line, I got really fed up with romantic pictures of depression and the notion that sadness is required reading for worthwhile art.

05_FRANK_2017

Frank is an annual public interest communications conference hosted through the University of Florida College of Journalism.

My design partner [and dear friend], Crystal Giraldo, and I worked on creating all of the branding and merchandise for the conference to fit the theme Curiosity.

2018 Gold Addy Award Winner

CURIOUSER_AND_CURIOUSER

To properly evoke curiosity, Crystal and I worked with conference directors to develop a visual identity around commonplace journals kept by 18th century philosophers. Primary deliverables included save the dates, programs, name-tags and water bottles.

The communications team for the University of Florida Division of Enrollment Management [UF EM] creates touch-points for prospective students that showcase the university’s resources, benefits and culture.

WHY_UF

During my time with the UF EM communications team, I collaborated with our web designer, developer and the director of communications to redesign and maintain the University of Florida Admissions website, which garnered hundreds of thousands of views each year. This included designing the Why UF page from the ground up.
